Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 where he enjoyed gambling on numerous card games when he was young. He discovered himself getting really aggressive in the above-mentioned card games while playing his father. After graduating from Sr. High school, Howard decided to put higher education on hold for a little bit and relocated to New York City to play some big-time chess. While playing chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s initial two years were tough as he would play countless hours and fail to win most times. He made some extra money by being an runner for the poker players. He judged he might improve his game by adjusting his life outside of poker. He made an attempt to acquire more sleep and focus more on the game.

The real advancement in his skills began when he began betting at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the greatest gamblers would regularly compete against each other. He was able to access a number of the foremost minds in chess. With their help, Howard would hone his strategic thinking techniques. He used these strategy concepts in the game of No-Limit hold’em.

He also helped his sibling Annie Duke master the game of poker. Annie was a great student of the game as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the correct decision. He told Annie Duke to head out to Las Vegas and compete in the WSOP tournaments. Annie Duke is one of the strongest female players the poker world has ever seen. Howard relocated to Sin City in 1993 and competed in money games for the following 10 years. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, he made the decision to play more tournaments.
