Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 in which he loved betting on different card games when he was young. He found himself becoming very aggressive in these particular card games while competing against his dad. After finishing Sr. High school, Howard decided to place college on hold for a bit and moved away to New York City to play some big-time chess. While playing chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard’s first two years were rough as he would play countless hours and fail to win a majority of the time. He earned some additional money by becoming an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He judged he might improve his game by analyzing his life away from poker. He made an effort to get more sleep and focus attention even more on poker.
The real improvement in his game began when he started wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the best gamblers would often challenge one another. Howard had access into several of the greatest minds in chess. With their assistance, he would tweak his strategic thinking techniques. He used these strategy ideas in the game of No-Limit hold’em.
Howard also helped his sibling Annie Duke master poker. Annie was a great student of poker as she would consistently be asking questions about how to make the proper decision. Howard told Annie Duke to head out to Las Vegas and play in the WSOP tournaments. Annie is one of the greatest female players the poker arena today. He relocated to Vegas in Nineteen Ninety Three and participated in money games for the next 10 years. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, Howard decided to participate in more tournaments.
