Howard Lederer lived in a family of 5 in which he liked gambling on different card games at a young age. He discovered himself becoming really aggressive in these card games as he was competing against his father. After finishing secondary school, Howard made a decision to put higher education on hold for a bit and moved away to New York City to play some serious chess. While participating in chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s first two years were rough as he would play countless hours and lose a majority of the time. He earned some additional money by being an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He believed he possibly could better his game by adjusting his life outside of poker. He brought about an effort to get more rest and focus attention more on the game.
The definite improvement in his game happened when he began wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best gamblers would regularly challenge each other. He was able to access a number of the best players in chess. With their assistance, Howard Lederer would hone his logical thinking skills. Howard applied these strategic ideas to the game of NL Texas Holdem.
Howard Lederer also assisted his sibling Annie Duke master the game of poker. Annie Duke was a superb student of the game as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the proper choice. He told Annie to move out to Vegas and play in the World Series of Poker tournaments. Annie Duke is one of the strongest women players the poker arena has ever seen. He relocated to Las Vegas in 1993 and competed in money games for the successive 10 years. When the WPT grew in popularity, he decided to participate in more tournaments.
