by Bo on January 14th, 2016
Phil Ivey has been labeled as the greatest poker competitor on the globe by most of the top pros. He was born in Riverside, CA and relocated to Jersey before reaching the age of 1. His grandfather taught Phil penny-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From then on on, he was hooked on poker and wished to pickup whatever he could about the game. Phil would tell his elders that he was planning on being a professional poker player. He did not let the adverse comments from other people annihilate his dream of becoming one of the greatest poker players in the world.
He started playing seriously after acquiring a false ID by the name of Jerome. He practiced his skills at the casinos of Atlantic City. The beginning few years for him were a teaching period and winning wasn’t a common outcome at the time. He became known at the 2000 WSOP where he made two final tables and came away with his first WSOP bracelet, in a two dollar, five hundred Pot-Limit Omaha event. At the last table he destroyed a number of the well known pros including "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
He made a decision to take his skills to the next level and moved out west to Vegas. He continues to participate in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players in the world. Phil credits his success to hard work and an immeasurable passion for poker. Phil states that he’s learning every single day and is very humble about his achievements. He admits to making mistakes in each game of poker and constantly aspires to improve.
Despite the fact that Phil has won some big tournaments, he favors winning money games on a regular basis.
